God’s Plan for our Re-Creation: Day 3 - May 07, 2019

Do you ever read the Bible and wonder to yourself, "what is God talking about?" In this lesson we are breaking down Genesis 1:9-10, or "day 3 of our re-creation." Is it weird that we are still on the first page, of the first chapter, of the first book of the Bible, and already asking questions about what God means? Jesus said many times, "He who has ears let them hear." (examples include Matthew 11:15, 13:9, Mark 4:9, Revelation 3:13)

If you believe in Jesus, and want to learn to follow Him, then these are important things for you to understand. In this lesson we are going to talk about God's plan for developing you one more step along the way. And to understand how to interpret the Scriptures, we will talk about Metonymy. This will give us some insight about what God is setting up for day 4, what He intends to accomplish with His work during day 3, and how everything the Holy Spirit is doing within us as God's teacher fits together with His plan.

Our Plan to Re-Creation

How do we respond to hardships?

Especially when they are ‘God sized problems’ that challenge our faith.

If we are beautifully and wonderfully made by God, then:

He has given each of us what we need to complete our purpose for Him.

This means that we are all, ‘perfect.’ Not by human standards, but by God’s measure.

In other words:

It doesn’t have to do with our mental aptitude

It doesn’t have to do with our physical condition

It doesn’t have to do with our level of personal discipline

It doesn’t have to do with our self-image

What people call mental and physical ‘disabilities’

God calls ‘opportunities for His strength to show in our weakness.’

Stepping Past Day 0, Appreciating Days 1 & 2, and into Day 3

1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

6 And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. 8 And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

9 And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

  • Day 0, Our messed up state before receiving Jesus

  • Day 1, Receiving Jesus - But there are 6 more day, so we can’t stop here

  • Day 2, Acknowledging Who God is

  • Day 3, … this is where we pick it up.

Every Bible is a love letter from your Heavenly Father to you.

God sent it to you to teach you about His Character.

Scripture uses linguistic tools designed for teaching.

  • Jesus used parables for instance.

  • Psalms uses poetry / song.

  • Metaphor

  • Metonymy

Metonymy

Definition: The substitution of the name of an attribute or adjunct for that of the thing meant, for example suit for business executive, or the track for horse racing.

Problem

In order to ‘decode’ what God is talking about here, we need to use the Scriptures to understand how God uses symbols - or what He means by them.

Chronologically, what is happening:

Genesis 1:

  • Day 0: Verse 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep.

  • Here on Day 3: Verse 9 And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.”

Questions to ask:

  • We talk about the "fruits" that come from God, from our relationship with God.

  • Where is God going to grow fruit? On the land right?

  • How do "fruits" factor in when dealing with troubles, hardships, temptations, etc.

2 My doctrine shall drop as the rain; My speech shall distil as the dew, As the small rain upon the tender grass, And as the showers upon the herb.

  • Here we see Metonymy at work.

  • God is not talking about rain, dew, grass, showers, and herbs.

  • God is growing His fruits WITHIN us

3 Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.

22 let us draw near with a true heart in fulness of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience: and having our body washed with pure water,

10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

Every Bible is a love letter from your Heavenly Father to you.

God sent it to you to teach you about His Character.

Day 3 is About Studying the Word of God

When we study the Scripture, we are learning from God’s Word.

Sounds obvious, but do you do it?

9 Wherewith shall a young man cleanse his way?

By taking heed thereto according to thy word.

10 With my whole heart have I sought thee:

Oh let me not wander from thy commandments.

  • Heed or direction from thy word - God’s Word - which instructs us about His Character.

  • The Psalmist searches - with all their heart

  • Realizing God’s Word is Truth, the Psalmist asks for help to ‘not wander’ or ‘not depart’ from God’s commandments.

105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet,

And light unto my path.

  • We need a light where it is dark.

  • Thus, the path is dark, or has troubles

  • Our light is the Word or Character of God

  • When we have God’s perspective we realize that what WE define as troubles as people is not what GOD defines as troubles.

  • Through these troubles he teaches us to depend on Him, grow our faith, and demonstrate who He is.

7 If ye had known me, ye would have known my Father also: from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. 8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us. 9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and dost thou not know me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; how sayest thou, Show us the Father?

This is why our relationship starts with Jesus.

  • He is an example OF US, not for us, but OF US when we are walking in God’s Character.

  • But to get there, we need to start by LEARNING about God’s Character

  • This is why Day 3 is so important!

The lies of the enemy:

  • Feel good

  • Tickle our ears

  • Appeal to our intellect with a little truth mixed with deception

160 The sum of thy word is truth;

And every one of thy righteous ordinances endureth for ever.

God tells us that His Word is “the sum of truth.”

  • This isn’t a math class, but if we use base 10 and add up 2 and 2 we get 4, right?

  • If it were possible to simply total up the Word of God, it would equal “Truth.”

  • Again, God is using Metonymy, using something we CAN understand to explain something HARD to understand.

2 I will worship toward thy holy temple,

And give thanks unto thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth:

For thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

So when hardships, temptations, stumbling blocks

and ESPECIALLY GOD SIZED PROBLEMS come:

  • We need to be prepared by the Word of God ahead of time

  • We need to praise & worship God FIRST

  • We need to give thanks to God for all He has given us

  • To get to the fruits like these, we NEED day 3.

  • Get into the Bible. Study it. Your Heavenly Father wrote it to you!

Genesis 1:9-10, And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

When we allow God to gather together “the depths” within us:

  • He exposes fertile ground for growth

  • The rains - or His teaching - can gather in the sky or first heaven above us

  • This sets in motion a pattern of development within us

The world is drought

  • If the rains stop, we call that drought.

  • The “wisdom” of the World is drought.

18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man thinketh that he is wise among you in this world, let him become a fool, that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He that taketh the wise in their craftiness: 20 and again, The Lord knoweth the reasonings of the wise, that they are vain. 21 Wherefore let no one glory in men. For all things are yours; 22 whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; 23 and ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.
